Papers of the Maverick and Van Wyck families, 1772-1972.

Correspondence and land records documenting economic and social activities of Samuel Maverick (1772-1852), and his descendants of Pendleton, S.C.; including 5 letters (1818-1820), written by Maverick in Charleston to Zacharias Taliaferro, Pendleton, re cotton market, shipments of gold and silver to China, and arrangements for purchasing a slave. Other papers include 37 letters, 1854-1861, Dr. Samuel Maverick Van Wyck (1835-1861), to wife Margaret C. Broyles Van Wyck, of Williamston, S.C., re Van Wyck's medical studies and life in New York, 1857-1860. Letters, 1861, from Van Wyck to his wife discuss Confederate camplife, in Alabama, Tennessee, and elsewhere while serving as surgeon to a cavalry unit under General N[athan] B[edford] Forrest. Collection contains land papers, including 10 documents (9 of which are signed by James Monroe), 1784-1823, re endowment of a public school and other property in Ninety Six District, S.C., and re lands owned in Alabama; together with 3 volumes, 1785-1848, containing deeds, plats, town plans, and indexes to land holdings in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Other papers in the collection include essays and addresses of Flora Keith Overman (1849-1935) of Salisbury, N.C., re United Daughters of the Confederacy in North Carolina, Christmas in South Carolina, the role of women in rebuilding the South, and an essay, "South Carolina Architecture" by J. Whitney Cunningham (1905-1956), architect of Sumter, S.C. Bound volume, c. 1877-1880, autograph album chiefly of members of the Forty- fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses, including Edwin Booth, Wade Hampton, John L Manning, Johnson Hagood, members of the U.S. Supreme Court, and others; and genealogical information relating to Anderson, Broyles, Calhoun, Maverick, Norris, Pickens, Taliaferro, and Van Wyck families.
